Timecrimes

Director: Nacho Vigalondo
Run Time: 92 mins
Spain

Concept:

After accidentally traveling to the past, Héctor (Karra Elejalde) meets himself and triggers a series of mysterious events that lead to a shocking crime. The gripping time-travel story -- at once deeply intricate and easy to follow -- also stars Candela Fernández.

Pros:
  • If you like time travel movies, this one is soul shattering
  • Its fun to try and figure out, what the main character should do next
  • Forces the viewer to pay attention
Cons:
  • I am starting to hate movies, where the main character knows nothing about scfi
  • Takes a bit of time, to get to the main plot of the movie
  • The main character wasn't that likeable

Don't Watch this Trailer, If you want to be Surprised at all

My Thoughts:

I wish I liked this movie. It has all the toppings that I love. Interesting plot, time travel and suspense but the film fails to capture my interest, cause I hate the main character. The character starts off as a lecher and he doesn't get much better. At the beginning, of the film all he problems starts cause he was trying to look at naked girl. If he wasn't a perv, he would have been fine and everyone around him would have been fine.

Bulletproof Salesman

Directors: Petra Epperlein & Michael Tucker
Run Time: 70 mins
(Actually not a foreign film but a lot of it is filmed in Iraq)

Concept:

As an armored luxury car salesman, Fidelis Cloer has made a fortune from America's war in Iraq. This documentary examines how this successful German war profiteer earns money when violence increases and soldiers' lives are threatened. A dedicated capitalist who roots for the escalation of the war, Cloer predicted correctly that the situation in Iraq would deteriorate and provide opportunities for him to get rich.

Pros:

  • An interesting look into a world that I know nothing about
  • I learned a lot of things about armored cars
Cons:

  • You will want to own a armored car after seeing this film

Check Out the Trailer

My Thoughts:

I thought is movie was cool. I was amazed at how calm, cool and collect the car sales man was and I was interested in how some facts about car salesmenship stayed the same, no matter what country the car was being sold in. I was also moved at how much the car salesman believed in his product.

Welcome

Director: Anees Bazmee
Run Time: 164 mins
India

Concept:

When Rajiv's respectable uncle gives his blessing to his nephew's love for Sanjana, he doesn't know the girl comes from a Mafia family. When he tries to retract his approval, Sanjana's brothers set out on a comical mission to convince him otherwise.

Pros:
  • A silly goofy film, that is a lot of fun
  • You will either laugh at the jokes or laugh at what India people think of the mafia
  • The songs are catchy and the dances are interesting to watch
  • The backdrops for the dances will have you laughing your ass off (For example, a giant motorcycle in the club dance scene)
  • Cute little love story
Cons:
  • Way too long, when you think the movie is over, it is just starting
  • Copy scenes from other famous Hollywood movies
  • Plot doesn't make any sense at all

Video
(I couldn't find a trailer that was in english, so I found a video of one of the dance scenes)
Check It Out!

My Thoughts:

Excuse me, I am still giggle over the white mafia dude english in the above video. Welcome, is a silly movie but I loved it. It has ton of faults but the movie makes up for them with its charm. The plot is lame and the main actor can't really act but the side characters really make this movie shine. The two mafia brothers made me laugh so much with their silliness.
If you are feeling sick, this is the movie to watch cause you don't need any brain power to watch this movie and something in it will make you smile.

OldBoy

Director: Chan-wook Park
Run Time: 120 min
South Korea

Concept:

With no clue how he came to be imprisoned, drugged and tortured for 15 years -- and no one to hold accountable for his suffering -- a desperate businessman seeks revenge on his captors, relying on assistance from a friendly waitress.

Pros:
  • The most intense film, that I have seen ever
  • If someone has ever wronged you, you wouldn't be able to think of a better revenge
  • Your mind will be broken after seeing this film
  • Camera work is ingenious and you will wonder why, no one else has done it yet

Check Out the Trailer

My Thoughts:

After seeing this movie my mind was broken. It was shattered in a million pieces and it was wonderful. The depth of emotions, that I felt while watching this film was amazing. In one scene, I could actually feel the bile rising up from the back of my throat. The film has a lot of gore visuals but it wasn't the gore effects that had me sick, it was the thoughts, that got to me. After seeing OldBoy, other revenge flicks paled in comparison.

The Method

Director: Marcelo Pineyro
Run Time: 115 min
Spain

Concept:

Seven of the corporate worlds elite gather in pursuit of the top job at Dexia Corporation. What begins as a normal job interview quickly unravels as candidates fall prey to THE METHOD, a psychologically brutal recruiting system in which only one can remain.

Pros:
  • If you are having a hard time finding a job, this film will make you feel better
  • As candidates answers questions, its fun to think about how would you answer the same questions
  • Never a bored moment, even through the whole film takes place in one room

Check Out the Trailer

My Thoughts:

This movie made me feel dirty. The characters were clever and heartless. The tests that the company put everyone through were soul shattering. I wouldn't have been surprised to find out that one of those characters kill themselves after they left the interview. There wasn't one person came off in a good light. The movie characters were so nasty to each other, that it was impossible to find someone to root for.

Sick Nurses

Directors: Piraphan Laoyont & Thodsapol Siriwiwat
Run Time: 82 min
Thailand

Concept:

Six nubile nurses and a devious doctor are brutally slain one after another by a vengeful spirit in this bloody shocker. The group had been illegally harvesting body parts for sale on the black market until pretty Tahwan threatened to squeal to the law. Not about to give up their lucrative scheme, her co-workers put her on the table for carving. But a week later, her dying curse comes true as her corpse rises from the grave to take its revenge.

Pros:
  • You may know where the plot is going, but you will never guess how it gets there
  • Has one of the most interesting endings to a movie that I have seen in a long time
  • Death scenes were creative
  • The main creature is eerie and I wouldn't want that after me

Check Out the Trailer

My Thoughts:

When I first started to view this film, I thought it was boring. Then I was shocked and amazed at how fast this film went from boring to awesome.  It was like someone threw cold water on me to wake me up while I was watching the film. The above concept seems like it gives a lot away in the film, but trust me when I say that the concept didn't tell you half the interesting stuff that happens in the film. I wish american movies would get as crazy as this film did.

What is the craziest movie you have seen?

In the Loop

Director: Armando Iannucci
Run Time: 106 min
UK

Concept:

The US President and UK Prime Minister fancy a war. But not everyone agrees that war is a good thing. The US General Miller doesn't think so and neither does the British Secretary of State for International Development, Simon Foster. But, after Simon accidentally backs military action on TV, he suddenly has a lot of friends in Washington, DC. If Simon can get in with the right DC people, if his entourage of one can sleep with the right intern, and if they can both stop the Prime Minister's chief spin-doctor Malcolm Tucker rigging the vote at the UN, they can halt the war. If they don't... well, they can always sack their Director of Communications Judy, who they never liked anyway and who's back home dealing with voters with blocked drains and a man who's angry about a collapsing wall.

Pros:
  • If you wanna learn how to cuss someone out, this film will teach you how
  • One of the funniest films, I have seen in the past year
  • Shows that a well written film is just as entertaining as a action film

Work Safe Trailer

Not Work Safe

My Thoughts:

This movie scares me, because I believe government really happens likes this. Yet as this movie scares me to death, it makes me laugh so much with its witty comments. For example, when the one character Macolm declares "You know, if I could, I'd punch you into paralysis!", I couldn't breath because I was laughing so hard. This movie is not for children or adults who don't like a lot of swearing, but for those who can stand swearing, and loves political movies, this film is a gem.

Are you Ok with swearing?

Sunshine

Director: Danny Boyle
Run Time: 107 mins
UK

Concept:

The sun is dying and Earth's days are numbered in this sci-fi thriller helmed by Oscar winner Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire). With permanent darkness looming, scientists devise a plan to reignite the sun before the lights go out forever. To do so, a crew of astronauts is sent hurtling through space on an intense mission to determine the fate of the planet.

Pros:
  • A serious take on a popular concept done in films
  • The music, the lighting effects and dialogue are all well done
  • I have never seen a film, where it has made me the feel the sun as a actual physical thing
  • A must see for science fiction geeks
Cons:
  • HAS THE WORST PLOT TWIST ENDING EVER-it almost ruins the whole film, but the beginning was so good, that the film is still worth seeing

Check out the Trailer

This trailer has SPOILER scenes in it
Don't watch it if you want to be surprise

My Thoughts:

I saw this film on HBO one night, when I couldn't sleep and it blew my mind. It was almost everything, I could have ever wanted in a scfi film. A powerful score, visual effects that made my TV shine like the sun, characters that I cared about, and dialogue that didn't make me wanna put my hair out. Then the ending happen, it was like someone came in my room and shot me in the heart. I don't want to focus on the ending cause this film has so much going for it but the ending twist is the worst thing that I have seen happen to a good film, in a long time.

What did you think of the trailer?
Can you think of a good film that has the worst ending ever?

Extra

The soundtrack for this film is so awesome and has been used in a few trailers, that I wanted to leave a track here for people to hear.

Angel-A

Director: Luc Besson
Run Time: 91 min
France

Concept:

When André, a down-on-his-luck gambler, dives into the icy Seine to end it all, he winds up instead rescuing Angela, a gorgeous, mysterious blonde. Filled with renewed passion for life, they set out to settle André's scores as they wander the City of Lights. Along the way, André finds himself, but he still has some questions about his leggy, lovely companion -can she really be as heavenly as she seems? Filled with wit, warmth and eye-popping visuals, Angel-A shows just how high you can soar when passion takes flight.

Pros:
  • One of the few movies that you can see Paris in all its glory
  • After awhile you won't notice that it is in black in white
  • This movie is exactly what you think is, yet it is done so well, you won't mind the unoriginal idea

Check Out the Trailer

My Thoughts:

This film is one of the few romance films that doesn't make me wanna gag. Usually in the states,  romance films show a guy that is a asshole in the beginning of the film and yet somehow changes into an awesome guy by the end of the film, without really showing the progressiveness of how he changes. Plus, when the guy does change he does it effortless, without making any mistakes.
Angel-A kicks all those other films asses by using the guy changes from asshole to gentleman plot correctly. It shows how the guy struggles with change and in accepting blame for his situation. The woman does come into his life and fixes a lot of his problems but she also shows him the causes of his problems.

Triangle

Director: Christopher Smith
Run Time: 98 mins
Uk/ Australia

Concept:

When Jess sets sail on a yacht with a group of friends, she cannot shake the feeling that there is something wrong. Her suspicions are realized when the yacht hits a storm and the group is forced to board a passing ocean liner to get to safety, a ship Jess is convinced she's been on before. The ship appears deserted, the clock on board has stopped, but they are not alone... Someone is intent on hunting them down, one by one.

Pros:

  • Has a awesome plot, that you won't see coming ( as long as you don't read any articles about the movie)
  • Great mind bender that after the film is over, you will want to talk to someone else about the film
  • Film is fun to watch twice, because after the first time watching it, the second time the viewer can look for clues

Check Out The Trailer

This trailer has SPOILER scenes in it
Don't watch it if you want to be surprise

My Thoughts:

This movie is my favorite movie beside Inception, that I have seen this year. When I first heard of the concept, I wasn't sold on this movie. The plot was too close to the plot of Ghost Ship and I hated that movie. I was expecting a boring, same old slasher film, what I received was a heart pounding action, science fiction movie that woke me up from the stupor that I was in.
Now, this movie isn't perfect, the budget is low, so everything has a not enough money look to it. The computer graphics looks like something that came from a syfi movie. The main set piece, the ship, seems to be lacking a lot of details. But what this movie lacks in budget, it more than makes up for it, in story.
The ending alone is reason enough to watch this film. When the ending hit me, my mouth was open in shock, amazement and horror.

13 Tzameti

Director: Gela Babluani
Run Time: 93 mins
French/ Georgian/ German

Concept:

Sebastian, a young man, has decided to follow instructions intended for someone else, without knowing where they will take him. Something else he does not know is that Gerard Dorez, a cop on a knife-edge, is tailing him. When he reaches his destination, Sebastian falls into a degenerate, clandestine world of mental chaos behind closed doors in which men gamble on the lives of others men.

Pros:
  • Tension so thick, that my heart was in my throat
  • Shows that even with the lack of music, emotions can still run high in a film
  • Once this film starts the  ball rolling, it doesn't stop
  • Images that will stick in your mind, even though its a black and white film
Cons:
  • It takes awhile for this film to really pick up it pace
  • Part of the greatness of this film is the surprise of the game, the less you know about the film going in, the better it is

WARNING the trailer has SPOILERS in it, if you don't want to know what the game is, don't watch it

Check Out The Trailer

My Thoughts:

When I was first trying to watch this movie, I almost didn't make it. The beginning of this film is so slow and it doesn't explain anything so it was really hard to get through the first half hour. But after that period, this film goes places that I would have never guessed in a million years. Somehow in a film, where there is no music and is filmed in black and white, I was able to get engrossed with the main character plight and couldn't stop watching.

The lady and the reaper from Hormoz Zamanpour Siahkal on Vimeo.

My Thoughts:

When I heard the music at the beginning, I was expecting something serious and sad, instead what I received was a fun light short about looking forward to death. I actually bursted out laughing at parts of the film. I absolutely love the way the doctor and the nurses were portrayed and I love the way the old woman has a bit of fire in her spirit. What did you think?

Alma

Director: Rodrigo Blaas
Run Time: 5:30 min
Spain

Concept:

Alma, a little girl, skips through the snow covered streets of a small town. Her attention is caught by a strange doll in an antique toy shop window. Fascinated, Alma decides to enter.

Pros:
  • Puts you in the mood for halloween
  • Shows what you can do with a film without dialogue
  • Its nice to see a 3d animation film that is darker

Check Out the Film Below

My Thoughts:

I love this short disturbing film. When watching this film, I felt like the director really understood how a child thinks and acts. When the child in the film hits the door with a snowball and then while walking drags her hand along the wall, I felt like he must have seen me when I was a child, cause I would have done the same thing at age 10. I also enjoyed the light music through out the piece, it makes the ending all the more disturbing. What did you think of the film?

PVC-1

Director: Spiros Stathoulopoulos
Run time: 85 min
Colombia

Concept:

Shot in real time, PVC-1 is based on the true story of a woman who is turned into a human time bomb in a bizarre act of terrorism.

Check out the Trailer:

My Thoughts:

This film concept had me at hello, the trailer also had me at hello too, so when I went to watch this film, I was expecting to enjoy it. I am sad to say that they should rename this film "My Pvc Pipe and Me take a Walk." Over 30 mins of this film, is watching the husband, child and wife walk in real time to a meeting place and unfortunately that slows the film down a lot from the tense action in the beginning of the movie. I am not saying this film it totally bad, there is moments in this film that is soul shattering but you have to get over the long ass middle of this film and to tell you the truth, I almost gave up on this film cause, I was bored to death.
One moment that save this film from being a waste of time is in the beginning, when you watch the family being attacked. The long take and real time camera action makes you feel like you are in the room with them and that you too are being attack by masked people.
Overall, this film isn't bad but it makes the viewer wait a bit for any type of pay off.

Fermat's Room

Directors: Luis Piedrahita & Rodrigo Sopena
Run Time: 88 mins
Spain

Concept:

Four mathematicians who do not know each other are invited by a mysterious host on the pretext of resolving a great enigma. The room in which they find themselves turns out to be a shrinking room that will crush them if they do not discover in time what connects them all and why someone might wish to murder them.

Pros:
  • Has a clever concept
  • Fast moving
  • Great movie for turning off the brain
  • This movie is a great example of what a person can do with a limited film budget
  • You can pause the movie and do the problems along with the characters
Cons
  • Bad guy motive doesn't make a lot of sense
  • Loose ends all over this film, if you think about it at all
  • Math in the film is not really hard at all

Check out the Trailer Below:

My Thoughts:

I have always sucked at math. So when I saw the concept for this film, I wasn't really into it but I decided to give it a chance because I was into the Saw like concept of a shrinking room. I am glad to say this film didn't disappoint me. Its true, that the so called "Math problems" seem like something I did in middle school but with the added pressure of the mystery of who is doing this and why, the film was  entertaining. The shrinking room was a great set piece and with the camera work in the film, I was never bored with the room. Every time the walls started to move, you the viewer, along with the characters felt the pressure of impending doom if you didn't get the math questions right in a minute.
The draw backs of this film, is that if you spend any time thinking about this film at all, the plot just falls apart. The motives of the villain doesn't make any sense with the amount of work the villain would have had to done in order to pull off this plot. Plus, the villain escape plan is clumsy at best and would never have work.
Overall, it is a fun film to watch, if you have spare time and is in a mood for a decent thriller.

My Thoughts:

When I first watch the short, I was amaze at how fast it drew me into the story. In less than a minute, I was invested in the cat troubles and was trying to figure out, who was taking the cats and why. I was impress with the poetry and the music blew me away. Everything came together so perfectly, I couldn't find one thing I didn't like about this short.
